HP Sure Sense blocking Microsoft Edge

Mar - 19 2021 | By

On some HP computers there is a program HP Sure Sense that is preinstalled on the system.  This program is designed to prevent malware and ransomware from getting into the computer.  There have been issues with Google Chrome automatic updates and also with Microsoft Edge, this may also affect other Chromium based browsers like Brave and Vivaldi as well as many others.

The user will get a Toast Notification in the lower right of their screen from HP Sure Sense Service  – File Restore Failed that references C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Temp\source####_########\##.#.###.##\msedgewebview2.exe could not be restored to its original folder. Where the # is a number for the source and for the version of Microsoft Edge that it is attempting to update to.  It also may alert on msedge.exe as well.

Solutions to this issue are:

  • Uninstalling HP Sure Sense and Update to the version of HP Sure Sense that supports Microsoft Edge
See Dragon-Fur’s steps for uninstall and update Latest version of HP Sure Sense as of March 2021 is 1.2.36.0 Rev. A which lists in the fixes “Fixes an issue where HP Sure Sense Enhanced Threat Protection terminates Microsoft Edge setup.exe when HP Sure Sense has not automatically updated first.”
  • Or just Uninstall HP Sure Sense
