Google Android Operating System
Google Android is based on Linux and Java, this operating system has been very popular on SmartPhones by many manufactures. Since Android 3 Honeycomb it has been available for use on a variety of sizes of tablets from many manufactures. Barnes and Noble has used it in their tablets, Amazon has built its Fire devices with Android creating their own user interface. Blackberry has provided some compatibility to Android apps.
With Android it is the responsibility of the manufacture of the device to provide the updates to the software, and in the case of SmartPhones the updates are provided at the discretion of the cellular provider. Some devices may not see any updates to a new version of Android while other devices will. Google has created with different manufactures devices named Nexus which are often able to update to the latest versions of Android.
Starting August 2015, Google started to release regular security updates for Android (Nexus) devices, other vendors are required to take the code and make it available to their customers. Here is the website to review the latest security updates for Android – https://source.android.com/security/bulletin/index.html If you have not received a security update recently you should be concerned with the security and safety of your device.

Microsoft introduced Windows Phone 7 first with Nokia in November of 2010. Windows Phone has been developed with security and stability in mind. The biggest issue for Microsoft has been getting developers to create Apps for the platform. Microsoft has included in each of these devices a mobile version of the Office suite providing Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint. It is a multitasking operating system that can run more than one thing at a time, the method to switch between Apps has changed in each Windows Phone 7, 8, and 10. Microsoft has developed and tested updates to each version of Windows Phone, some cellular providers have taken longer than others to get the updated delivered to their customers.
