Clear Browser Cache Files and Cookie Management

Edge

Click the Menu button in the upper right, choose Settings, Privacy & Security on the left.

Click Choose what to clear button, check and uncheck items you want or do not want removed

  • Browsing history – listing of sites you have recently visited in the past
  • Cookies and saved website data – can cause you to loose settings and logins on websites you visit
  • Cached data and files – images and data from sites you have visited in the past
  • Tabs – in case you have tabs that open each time you open Edge, uncheck it if you do not want to loose those choices
  • Download history – list of files recently downloaded in Edge
  • Autofill data –  information on forms that you have allowed Edge to store
  • Passwords – passwords for sites that you have allowed Edge to store
  • Media licenses – content licenses to access protected content from a website
  • Website permissions – sites you may have allowed to access resources like web cam

Recommend items to be checked – Cached data and files.


New Microsoft Edge based on Chromium

Click the Menu button in the upper right choose Settings, Privacy & Services on the left

Click Choose what to clear button, check and uncheck items you want or do not want removed, you can also do time periods of hour, 24 hours, 7 days, 4 weeks, or all time into the past.

  • Browsing history – listing of sites you have recently visited in the past
  • Download history – listing of files you have recently downloaded
  • Cookies and other site data – cookie and preference files for websites you have visited (can cause you to loose settings and logins on websites you visit)
  • Cached images and files – cached web page content and images
  • Password – any saved passwords for websites
  • Autofill form data (includes forms and cards) – information on forms that your have filled out
  • Site permissions – sites you may have allowed to access resources like your web cam
  • All data from the previous version of Microsoft Edge – purges out data from the previous version of Microsoft Edge after upgrading to the new version of Microsoft Edge
  • Media Foundation data – licenses, certificate, keys and other items that allow you access to copyrighted materials you have access to

Recommended items to be checked – Cached images and files.

There is an option right below Choose what to clear, Choose what to clear every time you close the browser.  From here you are given a list of the above items with switches to turn on the clearing of that item each time you close Edge.

Manage Cookies – go to the URL edge://settings/siteData and you can delete Cookies that you do not want for any of the websites you have visited in the past. You can also view what information is stored in each Cookie.


Firefox

Click the Menu button in the upper right, choose Options, select Privacy & Security on the left.

In the Clear Data button it offers check/uncheck the items you want or do not want removed:

  • Cookies and Site Data – can cause you to loose settings and logins on websites you visit
  • Cached Web Content – images and data from sites you have visited in the past

Recommended items to be checked – Cached Web Content

In the Manage Data button it offers you a list of sites you have visited and allows you to view that information or remove cookies you do not want by hand.  It provides you a list by the sites address (URL).

  • Remove Selected – removes all content for that specific site you have highlighted
  • Remove All – removes all of the content that is shown
  • Cancel – reverts any changes – same as clicking the X in the upper right
  • Save Changes – commits the removals that you have made

In the Manage Exceptions button it offers you the control over if you allow a website to store or not store information.

  • Address of website type in the URL for the site you wish to Allow or Block
  • Click Block – no site information or cookies will be stored visiting this website
  • Click Allow for Session – allows the website address you have provided to store information and cookies until Firefox is closed
  • Click Allow – allows the website to store information and cookies in Firefox
  • Remove Website – removes the highlighted sites settings for Allow or Block
  • Remove All Websites – removes all of the listed site settings in this screen
  • Cancel – does not store your changes in this screen same as clicking X in the upper right
  • Save Changes – commits your additions and changes in this screen

Google Chrome, and Brave

Click the Menu button in the upper right, choose Settings, click Privacy and security on the left of this page. Click Clear browsing data.

In the Basic tab you can check/uncheck the items you want or do not want removed:

  • Browsing history (list of sites visited)
  • Cookies and other site data (information stored about you from each site, like a login),
  • Cached images and files (files that are stored from web sites you have visited in the past).

You also have a time range of information to be cleared – last hour, last 24 hours, last 7 days, last 4 weeks, all time.

In the Advanced tab you can check/uncheck the following items you want or do not want removed:

  • Browsing history (list of sites visited)
  • Download history (files downloaded from websites)
  • Cookies and other site data (information stored about you from each site, like a login)
  • Cached images and files (files that are stored from web sites you have visited in the past)
  • Password and other sign-in data (that you have Chrome set to store)
  • Autofill form data (that you have allowed Chrome to store, like name, address, etc.)
  • Site Settings – sites you have given permission to like to use your webcam or microphone
  • Hosted app data – stores or other online applications that have stored data in Chrome

You also have a time range of information to be cleared – last hour, last 24 hours, last 7 days, last 4 weeks, all time.

In Privacy and security, choose Third-party Cookies in here you can view Cookies and Delete Cookies from specific websites you visit by choosing See all site data and permissions on the next screen:

  • From here you will see websites you have visited or were accessed when you went to another website.
  • Clicking the right pointing arrow allows you to look at the cookie(s) for that site and their contents.
  • If you click the trash can icon that will delete that cookie.
  • In the upper right you will have the choice to Remove all of the cookies in the entire list.

Other items, below Cookies and other site data are Security, Site Settings and Privacy Sandbox that control the following

  • Location data
  • Camera

  • Images
  • Pop-up and redirects
  • Ads
  • Background sync

Internet Explorer

Click either the Gear icon in the upper right or Tools, the choose Internet Options.

General Tab, Browsing history, click Delete button check/uncheck the items you wish to remove or not remove:

  • Preserve Favorites website data – keeps cookies and temporary files that are in your Favorite list
  • Temporary Internet files and website files – copies of webpages, images and media that are cached on the computer
  • Cookies and website data – files that store settings and passwords for sites you visit
  • History – list of the sites you have visited
  • Download History – list of files you have downloaded
  • Form data – information that you have allowed the browser to store from forms
  • Passwords – passwords that you have allowed the browser to store
  • Tracking Protection, Active X Filtering and Do Not Track – a list of websites excluded from these filters

Recommend items to be checked – Temporary Internet files and website files then click Delete button.


Opera

Click Menu in the top left, choose Settings, Privacy & Security click Clear browsing data button.

Check/uncheck the items you wish to remove or not remove:

  • Browsing history – list of websites you have visited in the past in Opera
  • Download history – list of files you have downloaded in the past in Opera
  • Cookies and other site data – files that store settings and passwords for sites you visit
  • Cached images and files – copies of webpages, images and media that are cached on the computer
  • Passwords – passwords that you have allowed Opera to store
  • Autofill form data – any form information you have filled in online and have allowed Opera to store
  • Third party services data – plugin and extension information for Opera

Recommend items to be checked – Browsing history, and Cached images and files then click Clear browsing data button.


Safari

iOS or iPadOS

  • Open Settings
  • Choose Safari
  • Choose Clear History and Website Data or…
  • If you do not wish to touch the History go to Advanced, Website Data
  • Choose Remove All Website Data – this leaves your History
  • Both options clear cookies

macOS

  • Open Safari
  • To clear History – click Safari menu in upper left choose Clear History
  • To clear Cache and Cookies – click Safari menu in upper left choose Settings, Privacy, Manage Website Data – click Remove for a specific site or Remove All to clean up everything for all websites.
  • To clear Cache alone – click Safari menu in upper left choose Settings, Advanced, check Show features for web developers, from the Develop menu choose Empty Caches. Go back to Safari menu in upper left choose Settings, Advanced, uncheck Show features for web developers to hide the Develop menu again.

Vivaldi

Click the menu in the upper left, choose Tools, Delete Browsing Data.

From the Delete Browsing Data dialog, choose Delete Data for All Time, you can also choose past hour, past day, past week or past 4 weeks.

You are then provided a check list of items check/uncheck the items you wish to remove or not remove:

  • All – all items listed below
  • Browsing History – a list of the sites you have visited in the browser in the past
  • Downloads – list of files that have been downloaded, but not the file you have downloaded
  • Cookies – files that store settings and passwords for sites you visit
  • Storage (including Extension Storage) – additional settings and data for websites and browser extensions
  • Cache – files and images that are stored on your computer from websites you have visited in the past
  • Passwords (including your Sync login password) – passwords that you have allowed Vivaldi to store
  • Form Autofill Data – information you have allowed Vivaldi to store from forms you have filled out online
  • Application Cache – for Chrome based applications to purge the files from those applications.
  • Site settings – sites you have given permission to use webcamera, microphone or other features
  • After checking the items you wish to remove click Delete

To manage Cookies, click the menu in the upper left, choose Settings, Privacy. Scroll down to cookies, under Saved Cookies you can Display Saved Cookies, and Delete All Cookies.

When you choose Display Saved Cookies you are provided a search box to find Cookies by site, and a list of sites you have visited. When you click on the site you can see the sites cookie information, and on the far right a X to remove that cookie.
